Summer Spectrum Overview
**SUMMER 2019 DATES: JULY 8TH-19TH**
Mercy's Summer Spectrum is a comprehensive summer program which offers enrichment opportunities for students of all grades. Here are some examples of the classes offered:
Math is “Fun”damental - Grade Levels: Entering Grades 1 & 2
This workshop is designed to help students strengthen fundamental math skills and look ahead at skills that will be taught in the next grade level. Students will use manipulatives, games, and technology to review topics such as addition, subtraction, and place value. In addition, students will learn and practice strategies needed for solving word problems and other more complex math tasks.
Reading is “Fun”damental - Grade Levels: Entering Grades 1 & 2
This program is designed to enhance reading ability. The strategies and materials used will vary in order to appropriately challenge each student. Each day students can expect to read highly engaging material and participate in a variety of activities that will enhance phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency.
Reading Ahead 3 - Grade Level:Entering Grade 3
Students will read a noted novel, which will be accepted as one of their summer reading requirements. Emphasis will be placed on vocabulary development, grammar review, and reading comprehension. A fun and creative learning environment will reinforce and promote reading skills. (The book will be provided.)
Math Enrichment 3 and 4 - Grade Levels:Entering Grades 3 & 4
This program will focus on math instruction to enhance fact recall, addition and subtraction skills, place value, fractions, money, time, and problem solving strategies. Manipulatives and games will be used to support understanding of concepts. Basic math concepts, fractions, and word problems will be emphasized.
Reading Ahead 4 - Grade Level: Entering Grade 4

Writing Enrichment 3 - Grade Level:Entering Grade 3
Students will engage in the five stages of the writing process to help them prepare for the next level of expectations. Participants will be able to choose topics within the writing genre. Emphasis will be placed on paragraph construction, grammar, and writing techniques.
Math Survey (One week) - Grade Levels: Entering Grades 5 & 6
Basic operations, fractions, decimals, percent, and word problems will be studied. In addition, students will be exposed to exponents and the order of operations. Manipulatives such as attribute blocks and tangrams will be used to enhance the program.
Study Skills Strategies (One week) - Grade Levels: Entering Grades 5 & 6
Students will be presented with practical study skill techniques that will be beneficial for studies in the fall. Topics include organization, memory techniques, listening skills, test taking tips, time management, and note taking methods.
Language Arts Enrichment (One week) - Grade Levels: Entering Grades 5 & 6
Students will read and analyze one recognized book exploring story elements. In addition, students will hone their skills in comprehension, inference, vocabulary, and written response. This course will satisfy one of the summer reading requirements for both grades.
Mathematics Highlights - Grade Levels: Entering Grades 7 & 8
This session will assess students to evaluate which topics participants need to improve upon. Students will receive individualized instruction in areas such as decimals, fractions, exponents, operations, expressions, and equations. Students who are ready will move on to functions. Special focus will be placed on understanding and solving real world tasks and word problems in order to prepare the students for 7th and 8th grade math including Algebra.
Reading Enrichment - Grade Levels: Entering Grades 7 & 8
Students will read a noted novel, emphasizing the following literary elements: plot, character, theme, and vocabulary. Also, students will write an analytical essay based on the reading. Successfully completing the class will satisfy one of the summer reading and writing requirements.
K Enrichment - Grade Level: Entering Kindergarten
This program will focus on enhancing fundamental skills such as phonemic and phonological awareness, number sense, and geometric knowledge. Students will build on these skills through hands on learning and technology in order to better prepare themselves for entering kindergarten.
STEM for Elementary Students - Grade Level: Entering Grades 2-6
Students will experience science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on activities that foster problem solving skills. Activities will promote 21st century skills, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Students will complete engineering challenges where they have to use their science and math knowledge to solve problems.
Musical Adventure - Grade Level: Entering K- Grade 4
Students will sing, play, and move in a fun, welcoming learning environment where they develop their singing, listening, and music theory skills. Instruction will address the nine National Standards of music education and emphasize exploring the voice, different instruments, and using the body to express sound. A creative and imaginative learning atmosphere will reinforce and promote musical skills and knowledge.
